“If you ever feel alone or you just can’t take the weight of this world just know you are never alone and talk to someone. Today is a year I lost my brother in arms because he didn’t talk and thought he was alone. Trust me when i tell you we are never alone.” - Eddie Kingston

We are not immune to the lure of wonder and mystery and awe: we have music and art and literature, and find that the serious ethical dilemmas are better handled by Shakespeare and Tolstoy and Schiller and Dostoyevsky and George Eliot than in the mythical morality tales of the holy books. Literature, not scripture, sustains the mind and—since there is no other metaphor—also the soul. We do not believe in heaven or hell, yet no statistic will ever find that without these blandishments and threats we commit more crimes of greed or violence than the faithful. (In fact, if a proper statistical inquiry could ever be made, I am sure the evidence would be the other way.) We are reconciled to living only once, except through our children, for whom we are perfectly happy to notice that we must make way, and room. We speculate that it is at least possible that, once people accepted the fact of their short and struggling lives, they might behave better toward each other and not worse. We believe with certainty that an ethical life can be lived without religion. And we know for a fact that the corollary holds true—that religion has caused innumerable people not just to conduct themselves no better than others, but to award themselves permission to behave in ways that would make a brothel-keeper or an ethnic cleanser raise an eyebrow.

"Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. 'Do you think the millionaire ought to pay more in taxes than the bus driver,' he demands, 'or less?' The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: 'MORE!' The year was 1985. The president was Ronald Wilson Reagan."

Save Community!

We demand that NBC reverse its crazy decision to ‘bench’ Community. The show is the best one on TV and NBC should renew it immediately!

Just Because You Know Something’s Coming

doesn’t make it any easier.

I’ve known for awhile that this would be Ozzie Guillen’s last year with the White Sox. The writing was on the wall. I can’t blame him for not wanting to return next year on a one year deal. What sane coach would do that i f they aren’t retiring?

So when I heard the news, I wasn’t shocked. I was definitely saddened though. It goes without saying, but Ozzie Guillen was the greatest manager the White Sox, hell, Chicago has ever seen. Many have tried to bring the World Series trophy to The Chi, but since 1917, only one man has:

Ozzie

This season was a mess. Ozzie made a lot of questionable moves, as did others in the organization (looking at you, KW). Many on the Sox message board called for his head on a nightly basis, to the point where it was too annoying to go on there. I hope these people are happy. I don’t know where the Sox go from here. I already feel like the next manager will get “The Wannstedt Treatment”, but hey, we’ll see.

The timing is right for Ozzie to head to Miami. I can’t blame him for leaving. Damn, I’m going to miss you, Oz. Can’t wait to see your face plastered on the left field wall. Statue is a must as well. I’m honored that I own a Guillen jersey with the World Series patch.

Most of my friends growing up were Cubs fans, as well as my family. But something about that group of guys on the South Side, in their black uniforms and that sweet ass logo just drew my eye. I didn’t hate the Cubs but what was the point? Black Jack, Big Hurt, Robin, Bo and the gang were all I needed. Even Michael Jordan knew that good guys wore black. And I loved to watch that slick-fielding shortstop named Ozzie Guillen.

He may be going to Miami, but Ozzie Guillen IS the White Sox. Now and forever. Phil/Halas/Ditka/Ozzie. Someone carve their heads in stone already. Good luck, new guy. I hope you’re ready to put your feet in a humongous pair of shoes.
